Expert Dog De-Shedding Tips to Reduce Dog Hair in Your Home
Are you tired of your home always being covered in dog hair? We can’t blame our beloved pets for shedding their fur, but it’s hard to deal with the never-ending piles of hair that accumulate. To help you reduce the amount of fur covering your home, our dog groomers in Wolverhampton have put together a list of dog de-shedding tips that make a world of difference.
Brush Frequently
The easiest and simplest way to stop your dog from moulting as much is to brush them frequently. During the fall and spring months, brush your dog at least twice a week (more if you have time).
If your dog has a double coat (for example, Huskies, Sheepdogs, and Pomeranians), you’ll need a brush that is specially designed for double coats for the best results.
Pro tip: Birds love animal fur for building nests, so put the excess out in a bird feeder to help the local birds in the spring.
Bath Often
Frequent baths should also be high on your to-do list to help your moulting dog shed less. Aim to bathe your dog twice a month with a specially formulated dog de-shedding shampoo.
If you find it tough to bath your dog, you can bring them into our salon for a regular bath. We use high-quality de-shedding shampoo and expert dryers to remove as much hair as possible.
Blow Dry
If you do bath your dog at home, don’t let them drip dry. Instead, blow-dry them with warm air using your hair dryer. Make sure it’s on the lowest heat setting, and use a brush to help remove the loose hair as you dry.
Brush After Drying
Once your dog is dry, your job isn’t quite finished! Give them a thorough brush once more to remove any excess hair that’s still clinging on. A lot of hair will come out in this stage of the process, so stick with it until your brush is coming away unsaturated.
Consider Clipping
Some moulting breeds can be clipped to help reduce shedding, but it’s important to talk to our professional groomers to get the best advice. A double coat helps to keep a dog cool in the summer and warm in the winter, so clipping it can often do more harm than good.
Give Supplements
If you have a breed that naturally moults, you won’t be able to stop it from happening. However, you can reduce the amount a dog sheds with high-quality supplements. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for coat health, and they are known to reduce shedding and promote a healthy coat. If your dog is shedding excessively, consult your vet about nutritional supplements.
